On the road to a sustainable food system – Newsletter October 2024
It has been a difficult year for sustainable development. On a global scale, wars are spreading and the election results in various countries do not exactly inspire hope. In Switzerland, parliament has cut funding for development cooperation by 110 million franks for the coming year. On the other hand, the Swiss population is sending contradictory signals: The people rejected the biodiversity initiative, but also rejected the expansion of motorways.
Overall, times are uncertain and often unpredictable. For our activities in sustainable development, this means that we must remain agile, try out different approaches, and remain open to change. The SDSN Switzerland office is undergoing a very specific change: From January, we will be located in new premises in Bern. Closer to politics and administration, closer to French-speaking Switzerland. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Biovision sincerely for nearly seven years of administrative and physical hosting in Zurich since our foundation.
Our future offices are located right next to the Kunstmuseum Bern. At the same time, we are delighted to welcome the Swiss Museums Association as a new partner organisation in our network. Museums play an important role in society, as culture can provide guidance in difficult times and help to strengthen social cohesion. This social cohesion is the basis for sustainable development.
However, according to a study just published by the University of Lucerne, the population’s perception of social cohesion in Switzerland has deteriorated. We are convinced that it is particularly important to take countermeasures in these times of multiple crises. We keep this in mind in our daily work. And with this in mind, we are also looking at the coming holidays as an opportunity to strengthen our sense of community.
We wish you a peaceful festive season!
Yours sincerely,
Carole Küng and Jorge Tamayo, Co-Directors of SDSN Switzerland
